E-Mice "iSchool" enhances information security and improves efficiency

2008-07-04

Tailor-made solution alleviates administrative load, allows for stronger focus on teaching and enhances Hong Kong students' competitive edge

(July 4, 2008, Hong Kong) E-Mice Solutions (HK) Limited (E-Mice), operator of Hongkong Post e-Cert services, today demonstrated the latest iSchool system to representatives from secondary and primary schools in Hong Kong. The iSchool system is a first-of-its-kind electronic administrative system that uses digital certificates to both strengthen security of school computer systems as well as alleviate the administrative load for frontline teaching staff.

During the seminar, Mr. Kenneth Yeung Che-Kuen of Hongkong Post gave a briefing on Hongkong Post's e-Cert activities and Mr. Keith Leung of the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer (OGCIO) shared with the audience key features associated with Public Key Infrastructure technology.

"Since the takeover of the e-Cert services last year, E-Mice has been receiving tremendous support from Hongkong Post, the Education Bureau, OGCIO and other Government bureaus and departments. Apart from developing e-Cert for different applications, E-Mice continues to explore relevant products to ensure the technology can as broad a range of our society as possible," said Eva Chan, Executive Director of E-Mice Solutions Hong Kong.

The iSchool platform uses e-Certs to authenticate the identities of Internet users and control access to school computer systems. Within this highly secure online environment, students' personal data, activity reports and attendance records as well as sensitive school information can be kept with complete safety and only be viewed or updated based on criteria set by the school. This platform also enables parents to sign off on school notices digitally and give school-related payment instructions online. At the same time, the iSchool platform helps to automate and streamline administrative processes so as to maximize teaching time and improve students' learning experience.

In view of the growing need for protection of digital data within the school sector as well as generally across our society, E-Mice recently launched its Encryptone software application to enable electronic documents, image files and other types of digital data to be encrypted and decrypted within seconds using e-Certs. This software application can be used to protect a user's own digital files as well as to exchange encrypted data with other e-Cert subscribers.

"As a responsible corporate citizen, E-Mice is committed to sharing the fruits of technology with current and future generations. We have pledged to help in ‘Building a credible system together to establish a harmonious society', and are dedicated to develop applications for e-Cert so as to promote the essentiality of internet security among students in Hong Kong," added Eva Chan.

The seminar was held successfully in the Chinese University of Hong Kong – Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Community College. Participants included principals, teachers and IT representatives from over 140 primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong.
